Punakha – The Valley of Eternal Spring

A short, scenic drive over the Dochu La Pass from Thimphu brings you to Punakha, a valley blessed with warm weather, fertile lands, and breathtaking river views. Once Bhutan’s capital, Punakha is now a serene retreat known for its stunning Punakha Dzong, often called the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan.

The Dzong sits at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, and is framed by blooming jacaranda trees in spring. It’s where royal weddings and significant national ceremonies are held. A walk across the suspension bridge nearby offers panoramic views of the river, rice paddies, and lush valleys.

Punakha’s natural beauty is equally captivating. Take a gentle hike through rice fields to the quirky Chimi Lhakhang, known as the fertility temple, dedicated to the “Divine Madman” Lama Drukpa Kunley. His eccentric approach to teaching Buddhism continues to intrigue and inspire.

With its long growing season, Punakha always feels alive — whether from buzzing bees, colorful butterflies, or smiling farmers. It’s a place of peace and light, making it a favorite for honeymooners, nature lovers, and anyone seeking balance between history and nature.
